Strukturell sind Menschen dort auf sich allein gestellt, sie werden vom Staat im Stich gelassen, wobei die Armen hinten\u00fcberfallen, diejenigen mit materiellem oder Bildungs\u00adkapital hingegen nicht. Schon die Gr\u00fcnder\u00adv\u00e4ter Benjamin Franklin, James Madison und\u00a0Thomas Jefferson\u00a0dr\u00fcckten Ende des 18., Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts der da noch jungen Nation einen Grund\u00adgedanken des schottischen National\u00f6konomen\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/1990\/29\/die-genialitaet-der-freiheit\/komplettansicht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Smith<\/a>\u00a0auf. In\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/1984\/05\/der-wohlstand-der-nationen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">The Wealth of Nations<\/span><\/em><\/a>, ein Werk, das die M\u00e4nner allesamt gelesen hatten und gern zitierten, findet sich die Idee vom Wohlstand einer Nation, der dann zunehme, wenn das Individuum sein Eigeninteresse ohne Eingreifen des Staates verfolgen k\u00f6nne.<\/p>\n<p>Die Folge war eine bereits von\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/2020\/25\/usa-demokratie-thomas-jefferson-alexis-de-tocqueville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexis de Tocqueville<\/a>\u00a0in dem Erfahrungs\u00adbericht\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/1983\/01\/ueber-die-demokratie-in-amerika\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">De la d\u00e9mocratie en Am\u00e9rique<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0(ver\u00f6ffentlicht in zwei B\u00e4nden 1835 und 1840) festgestellte Alleingelassenheit, die Freiheit als individuelle, vom Staat (mit Ausnahme des Second Amendment, dem Recht auf Waffen\u00adbesitz) kaum gesch\u00fctzte Unabh\u00e4ngigkeit des und der Einzelnen versteht. Deren strukturelle Schw\u00e4chen traten nun in Zeiten der Pandemie vollends zutage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I remember many years ago being surprised to hear <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Adam Smith<\/span> referred to as an early American, and surprised to realize that while many of my peers would easily say &#8222;Wealth of Nations&#8220; when they heard &#8222;<span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Adam Smith<\/span>&#8220; in a sort of reflexive <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeopardy!\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeopardy!<\/a> response, very few had actually read The Wealth of Nations, just as if you said &#8222;Das Kapital&#8220; people might easily answer &#8222;Karl Marx&#8220; without having ever glimpsed the work, or without even having any idea how many volumes it is comprised of. Sarah Pines is writing of Americans, and America, and chooses to begin with ideas of <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Adam Smith<\/span> and <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Alexis de Tocqueville<\/span>. Her giving the French title here caused me to pause and reflect: how many Americans read French? I remember in my teens my dad giving me <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">de Tocqueville<\/span> to read, in English, of course, but how many <a href=\"https:\/\/mwehle.eu\/wp\/?p=12635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">line dancing-Philadelphians<\/a> are familiar with <span class=\"\" style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">de Tocqueville<\/span> in any language? One can certainly argue individuals are shaped by their society&#8217;s myths without being consciously familiar with them, but I wonder if the very term &#8222;their society&#8220;, the idea of a unitary society, is perhaps of little validity. I wonder if Peter Temin&#8217;s application of the model of a dual economy to the US is really quite necessary to understand the country in 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sarah Pines, Die Zeit: Die USA sind kein Wohlfahrtsstaat.
