Bush administration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_W._Bush_administration\">Bush administration<\/a>\u00a0briefly used &#8222;coalition of the willing&#8220; to refer to the countries who supported, militarily or politically, the\u00a0<a title=\"2003 invasion of Iraq\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_invasion_of_Iraq\">2003 invasion of Iraq<\/a>\u00a0and subsequent military presence in\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"History of Iraq (2003\u20132011)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_Iraq_(2003%E2%80%932011)\">post-invasion Iraq<\/a>. The list released by the White House in March 2003 included 46 members.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ahas_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-ahas-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In April 2003, the list was updated to include 49 countries, though it was reduced to 48 after\u00a0<a title=\"Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Costa_Rica\">Costa Rica<\/a>\u00a0objected<sup id=\"cite_ref-latimes_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-latimes-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0to its inclusion. Of the 48 countries on the list, four contributed troops to the invasion force (the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland). An additional 37 countries provided some number of troops to support military operations after the invasion was complete.<\/p>\n<p>The list of coalition members provided by the White House included several nations that did not intend to participate in actual military operations. Some of them, such as\u00a0<a title=\"Marshall Islands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marshall_Islands\">Marshall Islands<\/a>, <a title=\"Federated States of Micronesia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Federated_States_of_Micronesia\">Micronesia<\/a>, <a title=\"Palau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palau\">Palau<\/a> and <a title=\"Solomon Islands\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solomon_Islands\">Solomon Islands<\/a>, did not have standing armies. However, through the\u00a0<a title=\"Compact of Free Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compact_of_Free_Association\">Compact of Free Association<\/a>, citizens of the Marshall Islands, Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia are guaranteed US national status and therefore are allowed to serve in the US military. The members of these island nations have deployed in a combined Pacific force consisting of <a title=\"Guam\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guam\">Guamanian<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Hawaii\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii\">Hawaiian<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"American Samoa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Samoa\">Samoan<\/a>\u00a0reserve units. They have been deployed twice to Iraq. The government of one country, the Solomon Islands, listed by the White House as a member of the coalition, was apparently unaware of any such membership and promptly denied it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In December 2008,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"University of Illinois\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Illinois\">University of Illinois<\/a>\u00a0Professor Scott Althaus reported that he had learned that the\u00a0<a title=\"White House\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White_House\">White House<\/a>\u00a0was editing and back-dating revisions to the list of countries in the coalition.<sup id=\"cite_ref-DailyIllini_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-DailyIllini-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-TheRawStory_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-TheRawStory-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Althaus found that some versions of the list had been entirely removed from the record, and that others contradicted one another, as opposed to the procedure of archiving original documents and supplementing them with later revisions and updates.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ahas_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-ahas-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>By August 2009, all non-U.S.\/UK coalition members had withdrawn from <span style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">Iraq.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coalition_of_the_willing#cite_note-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/span> As a result, the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Multinational Force \u2013 Iraq\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multinational_Force_%E2%80%93_Iraq\">Multinational Force \u2013 Iraq<\/a>\u00a0was renamed and reorganized to <a title=\"United States Forces \u2013 Iraq\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Forces_%E2%80%93_Iraq\"><span style=\"white-space: nowrap;\">United States<\/span> Forces \u2013 Iraq<\/a>\u00a0as of January 1, 2010.
