Opinion | Liz Cheney is the Obi-Wan to Trump’s Darth Vader

Star Wars fans, remember that scene in “Episode IV: A New Hope” when Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Sith lord Darth Vader are light-sabering it out on the Death Star? Kenobi and Vader are monologuing over the crackle of their clashing weapons when Kenobi declares, “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Then, in an act of self-sacrifice he hopes will hasten the destruction of the evil Empire, Kenobi allows Vader to do just that.

A version of this battle is playing out in real life with Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) as Kenobi and former president Donald Trump as Vader. Now, I realize that Cheney’s father, former vice president Dick Cheney, has traditionally been known as Darth Vader, what with the Iraq War and “enhanced interrogation” techniques and all that. But work with me, people.

They did not account for the betrayal of the Russian army (and by the critics’ logic, they probably should have foreseen it). Their descendants won only more than half a century later.

It is not scary to lose. The scary thing is to be in the ranks of the Soviet army, silently watching from the other side of the river as the fascists slaughter the insurgents, mocking them simultaneously: “Well, where’s your plan? Why didn’t you have a plan?”

Vor einigen Wochen erst brachte die erste Berliner Partei – es war die FDP – die Frage auf, ob die Stadt in Zeiten drohender Energieknappheit nicht auf das Anstrahlen exponierter Gebäude nach Mitternacht verzichten könne. Jetzt hat der Senat reagiert: Siegessäule, Staatsoper, Rotes Rathaus et cetera pp. bleiben dunkel. Der Anfang wurde Mittwochabend mit Berliner Dom, Marienkirche, Lustgarten und so weiter gemacht. 200 Gebäude sollen es insgesamt sein. Dabei geht der Senat noch einen Schritt weiter als ursprünglich gefordert: Das Licht wird nicht erst ab 0 Uhr gelöscht, es wird gar nicht erst eingeschaltet.

Zur Wahrheit gehört aber auch, dass die Ersparnis, nun ja, übersichtlich ausfällt. Der Anschlusswert aller Anstrahlungen beträgt circa 100.000 Watt, meldet die Senats­umwelt­verwaltung, der Stromverbrauch liege bei etwa 200.000 Kilowattstunden pro Jahr, die Stromkosten dafür beliefen sich auf rund 40.000 Euro pro Jahr. Das ist – fast nichts. Zumal das manuelle Abschalten der Strahler nach Schätzungen der Verwaltung einmalig in etwa denselben Betrag kosten wird.

Warum also das alles? Es ist eben nur fast nichts. Es geht um ein Zeichen. Die Politik kann die Bevölkerung nicht dazu aufrufen, weniger zu duschen und sich überhaupt kriegs­embargo­konform zu verhalten, ohne selbst aktiv zu werden. Da braucht es keine Außenministerin Baerbock, die bereits von „Volksaufständen“ fantasiert.

Doch noch etwas anderes zählt: Sorgsamer Umgang mit Energie ist zu allen Zeiten richtig. Und auch das Thema Lichtverschmutzung wird viel zu häufig vernachlässigt.

Baerbock hatte in der Runde erklärt, warum Deutschland von Kanada die Auslieferung einer Turbine für die Pipeline Nord Stream 2 an Russland eingefordert hatte. Es handle sich dabei mitnichten um „Doppelmoral“, betonte die Außenministerin. „Wenn wir die Gasturbine nicht bekommen, bekommen wir kein Gas mehr“, schilderte Baerbock die Argumentation gegen Kanadas Bedenken, „dann können wir als Deutschland überhaupt gar keine Unterstützung für die Ukraine mehr leisten, weil wir dann mit Volksaufständen beschäftigt sind“.

Auf Nachfragen der Moderatorinnen ging Baerbock über ihre auffällige Wortwahl hinweg. „Wenn wir kein Gas mehr hätten!“, betonte sie den hypothetischen Charakter ihrer Äußerung. „Das ist ja genau mein Punkt. Dass wir Gas weiter aus Russland brauchen.“ Die Grüne räumte schließlich ein: „Ja, okay, ich habe in einem etwas weiten Bogen gedacht.“

Das Thema verfolgte Baerbock auch bei einem Auftritt in Sachsen-Anhalt am Donnerstag. „Ich habe es bewusst sehr zugespitzt formuliert“, erklärte die Ministerin auf eine Frage zu ihren Äußerungen.

Nearly one third of people killed by US police since 2015 were running away, driving off or attempting to flee when the officer fatally shot or used lethal force against them, data reveals.

In the past seven years, police in America have killed more than 2,500 people who were fleeing, and those numbers have slightly increased in recent years, amounting to an average of roughly one killing a day of someone running or trying to escape, according to Mapping Police Violence, a research group that tracks lethal force cases.

In many cases, the encounters started as traffic stops, or there were no allegations of violence or serious crimes prompting police contact. Some were shot in the back while running and others were passengers in fleeing cars.

Of the 2,500 people killed while fleeing since 2015, only 50 or 2% have resulted in criminal charges. The majority of those charges were either dismissed or resulted in acquittals. Only nine officers were convicted, representing 0.35% of cases.

US police kill more people in days than many countries do in years, with roughly 1,100 fatalities a year since 2013. The numbers haven’t changed since the start of the Black Lives Matter movement, and they haven’t budged since George Floyd’s murder inspired international protests in 2020.

Lithuania has banned Moscow Orthodox Patriarch Kirill from entering the country because of his support for Russia’s continued invasion of Ukraine, the Interior Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

The cleric was added to the list of unwanted persons on June 23, without any public announcement until now.

The Patriarch of Moscow will not be able to visit Lithuania at least until June 23, 2027.

Lithuania proposed sanctions against Kirill at the European Union (EU) level last spring, but he was removed from the EU’s sixth sanctions package adopted in June at Hungary’s insistence.

Earlier this month, Lithuanian Orthodox Bishop Ambrose travelled to Moscow to see the Patriarch, and said he received support for the Lithuanian Orthodox Church’s plans to secure greater autonomy from the Moscow Patriarchate.
