I really liked Lukošaitis’s work for a number of reasons. The format of many A4 views communicates the enormous number of individual victims. The repetition of the progression from left to right gives one the feeling of a mechanistic process. I was affected by the details of household objects, the human scale of executions and burial pits. In Lithuania killers saw the faces of their victims; this was not one of the execution camps in Poland.
I was taken also by the text describing the work. Traumatic experiences. Tragic events. Victims of the tragedy. Calling programmatic mass murder a tragedy to me rings as false as calling America’s war on Vietnam a mistake.
